Inaugural Zimele Walkathon

Zimele means literally, to stand on your own two feet – a statement attributed to South African activist, Steve Biko. Zimele exists to enable local people in East Africa to do precisely that, through its support of education and health projects. Zimele is allied with St Kevin’s College, Toorak and works in partnership with Edmund Rice Foundation (Australia).

Zimele Walkathon 2012

Sunday 14th October was a fantastic community day raising awareness and funds for the Star Support Group, which is helping people in Yambio, South Sudan who have HIV/AIDS, to live and die with dignity. There was overwhelming interest in the event, with the walkathon raising $38,000 towards this cause. About 600 people attended the inaugural Zimele Walkathon, with about 550 people walking or running the 6km or 12km event. We were blessed with a beautiful, sunny, spring day – perfect conditions for a stroll or run in the lovely parkland setting in Fairfield. There was a great atmosphere provided by those that participated and volunteered on the day. It was wonderful to see children, teenagers, young adults, parents and seniors participate in the event and help ‘make a difference’ to our African brothers and sisters.
