Two significant fundraising events have been held recently.
Terrace Timor Network Annual Dinner
The Terrace Timor Network’s Annual Dinner in support of Comunidade Edmund Rice (CER) was held at the Brisbane Riverview Hotel on June 17. Funds raised this year will be used to sustain the basic health and educations services that CER supports by ensuring the ongoing employment of the health workers, preschool and primary teachers that CER employs. Special guests were two of the Timorese women from CER’s Art and Craft Co-operative. MC for the evening was Phil Smith, Brisbane radio host, former award winning ABC journalist, author and RAAF Officer, whose military service included peace keeping duties in Bougainville and East Timor and humanitarian relief work in Aceh and West Irian. 3rd Annual Zimele Foundation Dinner
On Saturday evening, June 25, 480 people attended a most successful 3rd Annual Zimele Foundation Dinner at St Kevin’s College, Toorak in Melbourne. Special guests in attendance from Br Beausang Catholic Education Centre (BBCEC), Embulbul, Nairobi, were Br Francis Otieno (Principal), Ms Catherine Gathogo (Head Teacher, Secondary) and Ms Eva Wanyaga (Principal, Primary). Francis and Eva addressed the gathering, raising awareness of the circumstances of the local people in Embulbul and outlining the educational opportunities being made possible through the generosity of their Australian supporters. Funds raised this year will enable the completion of the new BBCEC Primary School and provide ongoing support for Ruben Centre. Francis and Eva paid tribute to Tom Purcell (Chair, Zimele Foundation) and thanked him for his outstanding support. An immersion group comprised of recent old boys and current staff, whom Tom will be accompanying to East Africa within the next week, was presented to the gathering.
